Ratios rather than concentrations of nutritionally important elements may shape honey bee preferences for ‘dirty water’

چکیده
1. Honey bees require minerals for a complete diet. However, from flowers can be inadequate in concentration and composition. Therefore, honey may drink ‘dirty water’ natural sources such as puddles. Some research has attempted to simulate this through bee bioassays, but date, these have tested individually, not mixtures would occur nature. Here, the first time, we use bioassays which range of mineral are presented together choice experiments. 2. Six (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, NH4Cl, KH2PO4) were used different stoichiometries, water’, puddles, often drink. Based on tolerance ranges literature, offered aqueous solutions at low, medium, high, mixed molar concentrations. Deionised water sucrose neutral positive controls, respectively. Petri dishes set up containers laboratory. Twenty worker (Apis mellifera L.) placed into each container observed drinking behaviour 1 h. 3. preferred treatment comprising high Na:K ratio, medium molarity NaCl low other minerals. This novel finding suggests that should investigated larger scale with multiple hives field highlights importance stoichiometrically balanced diets.

Salt preferences of honey bee water foragers.
The importance of dietary salt may explain why bees are often observed collecting brackish water, a habit that may expose them to harmful xenobiotics. However, the individual salt preferences of water-collecting bees were not known. We measured the proboscis extension reflex (PER) response of Apis mellifera water foragers to 0-10% w/w solutions of Na, Mg and K, ions that provide essential nutri...
متن کاملMacronutrient ratios in pollen shape bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) foraging strategies and floral preferences.
To fuel their activities and rear their offspring, foraging bees must obtain a sufficient quality and quantity of nutritional resources from a diverse plant community. Pollen is the primary source of proteins and lipids for bees, and the concentrations of these nutrients in pollen can vary widely among host-plant species. Therefore we hypothesized that foraging decisions of bumble bees are driv...
متن کاملShape and dynamics of thermoregulating honey bee clusters.
A model of simple algorithmic "agents" acting in a discrete temperature field is used to investigate the movement of individuals in thermoregulating honey bee (Apis mellifera) clusters. Thermoregulation in over-wintering clusters is thought to be the result of individual bees attempting to regulate their own body temperatures. At ambient temperatures above 0( degrees )C, a clustering bee will m...
متن کاملWater logging may inhibit plant growth primarily by nutrient deficiency rather than nutrient toxicity
The aim of our experiments was to investigate whether nutrient deficiency or toxicity is the cause for growth inhibition of wheat and barley in waterlogged soils. Experiments using two soils (top and subsoil) differing largely in various characteristics revealed a growth inhibition of wheat and barley in the case of subsoil due to water logging, without Fe or Mn toxicity. Water culture experime...
متن کاملHigh Fructose Corn Syrup: A Potential Feed for Honey Bee
The honey bee obtains its all nutritional demands from nectar and pollen. In the case of nectar and pollen limitation, beekeepers use a substitute. It has been a long time that sucrose is used as the conventional substitute for nectar and pollen in the bee feeding to provide its nutritional needs during winter and stimulation of springchr('39')s larval nourishment. High fructose corn syrup is ...
